In five denominations, the peso coin has been issued by Mexico's sovereign mint: 50, 20, 10, 5, 2.5, and 2. In 1918, the 2.5-peso coin began issuance and only continued for three years. In 1944, however, it was restarted and through that decade, continued intermittently. Re-strike coins with a 1945 date began being issued by the Mexican Mint in 1951. Production of the coin stopped in 1972 after 5 million in 1945 re-strike coins were issued in total.

The obverse side of this coin features Mexican war hero Miguel Hidalgo y Castilla in profile. Also on this side, along with the coins date and denomination, are the words “Dos y Medio Pesos”.
The coin’s reverse side features Mexico's coat of arms – a golden eagle stands with a snake in its beak, wings spread, and perched atop a cactus.
