To be used as legal tender, the Gold Krugerrand was first conceptualized in 1967. Several years later, for private South African gold bullion ownership by the general public, this coin was created.
The reverse side of this coin shows an image of the springbok antelope, South Africa's national animal. The gold’s weight and year of minting are also displayed on this side.
On the obverse side of this coin, you will find – in English and in Afrikaans – "South Africa", along with a likeness of its first and only president, Paul Kruger.
Each coin is marked ½ Troy oz., its net gold weight, and its gold purity is 91.67%, or 22k. Since its inception, over 50 million ounces worth of the Gold Krugerrand have been sold. Still available for purchase, it is one of the most widely traded gold coins.
