In the late 40s, post California Gold Rush, there was a lot of gold coming into the United States treasury. So, plans for the $20 double Eagle coin expanded from the already existing one-dollar gold piece plan. Today, it remains as one of the most popular American circulating coins among collectors. Between 1849 and 1907, Liberty Head Double Eagles were minted in several slight variations. This occurred in Denver, Carson City, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Philadelphia.
A heraldic eagle with striped breast shield is featured on the reverse side of this coin representing the original states; there are 13 stars resting above. On the obverse side of this coin, designed by Chief Engraver James Barton Longacre, a Lady Liberty portrait facing the left is shown.
This XF (Extra Fine) her $20 coin is composed of .9675 troy ounce of .90 fine gold.
