Throughout the course of history, countless designs have been featured on French francs. They have borne the portraits of early French presidents, emperors, and kings. A "Guardian Angel" design took over in the 19th century, however, as the primary coin design.

A fantastical story is the base for the choice of an angel on this coin. A bolt of lightning saved a man about to face his doom at the guillotine. He later attributed the saving of his life to a coin he carried in his pocket – not surprisingly, it had an angel on it.
